Volleyball Team Spilts on Final Day of OAC/HCAC Challenge

ADA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Saturday, September 24, 2011) at the Ohio Athletic Conference and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Challenge hosted by Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center.  The Yellow Jackets fell to Bluffton University, 3-2, in the first match and then defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph, 3-1, in their final match.

With the split, B-W finished 2-2 at the OAC/HCAC Challenge and is now 12-7 on the season.  On the first day, B-W lost to Transylvania (Ky.) University, 3-2, and beat Hanover (Ind.) College, 3-1.

In the match with Bluffton, the Yellow Jackets were defeated in five sets and by the scores of 17-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18 and 15-11. B-W was led offensively by junior middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) with nine kills and freshman middle hitter Nicole Christner (Minerva) with seven. Freshman setter Katie Primeau (Pemberville/ Eastwood) set up the offense with 35 set assists in just her second start of her career. Primeau also posted a team-high four service aces.  The defense was led by sophomore Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) with 19 digs and by freshman outside hitter Kayse Schmucker (Kent/Roosevelt) with 18.

Against MSJ,  the Yellow Jacket defeated the Lions in four sets and by the scores of, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-17. The B-W offense was led by junior outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) with 10 kills. Three Yellow Jackets all recorded five kills a piece to help the offense, including Switalski, Deleur and Christner. The offense was again set up by Primeau as she posted 27 set assists.  Defensively, junior defensive specialist Natalie Emmons (Ashland) led the team with 20 digs. She was followed by Schmucker with 16.

The Yellow Jackets remain on the road this week with matches at Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. and at OAC-rival Marietta College on Friday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. The next home match is on Tuesday, October 11 when B-W hosts Heidelberg University in an OAC match in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:00 p.m.
