HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team won its third consecutive match to finish up play on the final day of its annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina today (Wednesday, March 9) with a 8-1 victory over Elizabethtown (Pa.) College. BW posted a 3-3 record in Hilton Head.
With the victory, BW improves to 7-6 overall. Elizabethtown falls to 1-1 overall.
The Yellow Jackets, who played six matches in four days in Hilton Head, are seeking to win their fourth Ohio Athletic Conference title and earn their fourth NCAA Division III National Tournament berth in the last five seasons.
BW gained a 3-0 advantage in doubles as the number one tandem of senior number one singles player Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore No.3 player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Elyria Catholic), won 9-7; the duo of junior No.4 singles player Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and senior No. 5 player Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) won, 8-1; the No.3 duo of freshman Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and senior No.6 player Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) also won, 8-1.
In singles play, BW won five of the six matches as Pecinovsky won at No.1 by scores of 6-3, 6-4; junior Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO/Ryad Al Maarifa) won at No. 2 by the scores of 6-1, 6-2; Mittler won at No.3 in a third set super tie-breaker by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3); Greene won at No.4 also via super tie-breaker by scores of 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5); and Pelosi won at No.5 by the scores of 6-0, 6-1.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, March 26 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University at 1:00 p.m. All home outdoor matches are played on the "Pop" Collins Courts in the BW campus.
