Baldwin Wallace University Women's Tennis Team Falls To First Place Ohio Northern In OAC Match

ADA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team lost to its arch-rival, the first place  Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, 6-3, today (Saturday, April 16) in a key Ohio Athletic Conference match inside the the ONU Sports Center.  The loss ended two Yellow Jacket winning streaks.  The match was played indoors due to inclement weather outdoors.


With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak this season and a 16-match OAC match winning streak dating back to the OAC Championship match in 2009.  BW has won 51 of its last 54 OAC matches. ONU improved to 16-5 overall and 6-0 in the OAC.  BW and ONU have combined to win the last six OAC regular season titles and five of the last six OAC Tournament crowns.

The Polar Bears took an early 3-0 lead by claiming victory in all three doubles matches before the Yellow Jackets responded by claiming the first two singles matches and cutting the deficit to 3-2.  

At number one singles, senior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) won her match by scores of 6-1 and 7-5 to improve to 15-8 overall.  Junior Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO/Ryad Al Maarifa) won at No. 2 by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 and improved to 9-2 overall.   BW would claim its third and final point when senior No.5 player Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won in a third-set super tie-breaker by scores of 7-5, 6-7 (7-9) and 1-0 (10-8) at fifth singles and improved to 13-9 overall.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, April 19 when it plays host to Heidelberg University in an OAC match at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts in Berea at 3:30 p.m.  BW also hosts OAC-foe Wilmington College on Friday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m.
