Baldwin Wallace Women's Tennis Team Defeats Heidelberg, 5-0, in Quarterfinals of OAC Tournament

BEREA, OHIO --  The second seed Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated the seven seed Heidelberg University, 5-0, today (Wednesday, May 4, 2011) in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts.


In the OAC Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

With its win, BW improved to 16-7 overall and will advance to the semi-finals to face the winner of the match between #3-seed John Carroll University and #6-seed Marietta College at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason on Friday, May 6 at 4:30 p.m.  Heidelberg ends its season with a record of 4-15 overall.  

The other semi-finals match will feature of the winner of today's match between #1-seed Ohio Northern University and  #8-seed Wilmington College versus the winner of the match between  #4-seed Otterbein University and #5-seed University of Mount Union at 4:30 p.m. The OAC Championship Match is on Saturday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets took and early 3-0 by taking as the number-one duo of senior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Becky Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won, 8-2, to improve to a team-leading 20-8 overall; the No.2 duo of junior Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and senior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green), won, 8-0, to improve to 16-5 overall; and the No.3 tandem of senior Katy Marshall (Medina) and freshman Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) won, 8-1, to improve to 11-8 overall.

In singles action, Pelosi was captured the fourth point at No.5 singles as she won her match by an injury retirement (5-0) and BW closed out the match with the fifth point when Marshall won at No. 6 singles by scores 6-2 and 6-0.  The Yellow Jackets were leading the remaining four matches when the deciding fifth point was secured.  Peckinovksy was leading her match at first singles 6-1 and 3-2, junior Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO/Ryad Al Maarifa) was up 6-3, 3-1 at second singles, Mittler had an 6-5 advantage at third singles and Green led her fourth singles match 6-1.
