Baldwin Wallace Women's Tennis Team Wins 5-0 Over John Carroll and Advances to the OAC Finals

MASON, OHIO --  The second seed Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated the three seed John Carroll University, 5-0, today (Friday, May 6, 2011) in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Lindner Family Tennis Center.

 
In the OAC Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 17-7 overall and advance to the finals play #1-seed Ohio Northern University at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.  John Carroll ends its season with a record of 9-11 overall.  

BW took an early 3-0 lead as the number-one duo of senior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Becky Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won, 8-4, to improve to a team-leading 21-8 overall; the No.2 duo of junior Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and senior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green), won, 8-2, to improve to 17-5 overall; and the No.3 tandem of senior Katy Marshall (Medina) and freshman Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) won, 8-6, to improve to 12-8 overall.

In singles action, junior Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO) captured the fourth point at No.2 singles as she won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 and BW closed out the match with the fifth point when Pelosi won at No. 5 singles by scores 6-2 and 6-0.  The Yellow Jackets were leading the remaining three matches when the deciding fifth point was secured.  Peckinovsky was leading her match at first singles 6-0 and 4-2, Mittler was up 6-2, 4-1 at third singles, and Greene led her fourth singles match 5-2. Baker's match at sixth singles was not started when the match ended.
