Baldwin Wallace Women Win Sixth Straight Match on Jack Bethlenfalvy Day in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 8-1, today (Saturday, April 9, 2011) in an OAC match on the "Pop" Collins Courts  on "Jack Bethlenfalvy Appreciation Day" in Berea.  The victory was BW's 49th in its last 51 OAC matches.


Prior to today's match, BW veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy was recognized for his long service to the College and presented with a plaque to honor his 300th career victory that he recorded in an 8-1 win against Adrian (Mich.) College on February 19.  Following the win today, Bethlenfalvy, the winningest women's tennis coach in BW, OAC and Ohio Collegiate history, is now 306-197 in his career.


Bethlenfalvy's Yellow Jackets, now 10-6 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC, are the defending OAC regular season and tournament champions three of the past four years.  With its loss, JCU fell to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.


BW gained a 2-1 advantage in doubles as the number-two duo of senior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) and junior Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) won, 8-6, and the No.3 tandem of senior Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) and freshman Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) won, 9-8, including a 7-2 advantage in the tie-breaker.


To date, the No.1 doubles duo of senior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Catholic) have the most doubles wins with 15 and the best doubles mark at 15-7. Greene and Pelosi are 12-5 overall and have won six straight.


In singles play, BW dominated the Blue Streaks by winning 72 of 91 points and all six matches. Pecinovsky won at No.1 by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Junior No.2 player Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO) won, 6-1 and 6-0. Mittler won at No.1 by the scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Greene won at No.4 by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Pelosi won at No.5 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-4. And, Marshall won at No.6 by the scores of 6-4 and 6-0.


Greene continues to lead all Yellow Jacket singles players with 15 wins and a 15-6 mark, including a 10-3 slate at No.4. Pelosi is second with 14 wins, Pecinovsky third with 13, Mittler is next with 12 and Marshall rounds out the double-figure winners with 11.


BW returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 when it travels to Alliance to play OAC-rival the University of Mount Union at 3:30 p.m.  The next home match is on Tuesday, April 19 against Heidelberg University at the Collins Courts at 3:30 p.m.
