No. 11 Men’s Wrestling Finishes Third at 58th North Central (Ill.) Invitational

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The No. 11 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished third at the 58th Annual North Central College Invitational inside Residence Hall.

BW finished third of 13 teams with 94.5 points.   No. 2 nationally ranked Augsburg (Minn.) University was the champion with 176.0 points.  The Yellow Jackets had nine top six placers, including one runner-up.

Junior No. 6 nationally ranked 133-pounder Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.) – 2nd Place

  • Won a 15-0 technical fall over Carson Murray of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Won an 8-4 decision over Dominik Mallinder of Wisconsin-Whitewater
  • Won a 10-6 decision over No. 2 nationally ranked Andrew Perelka of John Carroll
  • Lost an 18-2 technical fall to No. 1 nationally ranked Robbie Precin of North Central 

Sophomore 157-pounder Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward) – 3rd Place

  • Bye in the first round
  • Won by pinfall in 1:45 over Gavin Morawitz of Quincy (Ill.)
  • Won a 14-2 major decision over Lukas Paulson of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Lost a 6-4 extra decision to Blake Jagodzinske of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Won a 9-0 decision over Aj Woodfork of Quincy (Ill.)

Sophomore 165-pounder Donovan Palmer (North Ridgeville/Lutheran West) – 4th Place

  • Bye in the first round
  • Won a 10-2 major decision over Buddy Evangelista of Wisconsin-Whitewater
  • Won a 4-3 decision over of Tanner Kroells of Augsburg (Minn.) 
  • Lost by pinfall in 1:37 to No. 14 nationally ranked Cole Cervantes of North Central (Minn.)
  • Lost an 8-1 decision to Cooper Willis of Augsburg (Minn.)

Senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference 285-pounder Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) – 3rd Place

  • Won by pinfall in 2:59 over Garner Simmons of Wisconsin-Whitewater
  • Won a 3-1 decision over Hunter Gorecki of Augsburg (Minn.) 
  • Lost a 4-0 decision to No. 10 nationally ranked Robby Bates of North Central
  • Won a 10-2 major decision over Cam'ron Harper of Aurora (Ill.)

Senior 184-pounder Ryan Haas (Toledo/Springfield) – 5th Place

  • Won a 7-2 decision over Ricardo Adame of Quincy (Ill.)
  • Lost a 10-2 major decision to Payton Geigner of North Central
  • Won by injury default over Brian Holloway of Quincy (Ill.)
  • Won an 8-2 decision over Alton Mullinax of Aurora (Ill.)
  • Won a 9-2 by decision over Ricardo Adame of Quincy (Ill.)

Junior 125-pounder Johnny Novak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) – 6th Place

  • Lost a 16-0 technical fall to No. 3 nationally ranked Derek Steele of Augsburg (Minn.)

Junior 285-pounder Mitch Sanders (Newbury) – 6th Place

  • Lost a 3-1 decision to Robert Beese of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Won a 3-2 decision over Robert Castellano of Eureka (Ill.)
  • Won a 3-1 extra time decision over Hunter Gorecki of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Won an 8-4 decision over Jagger Schack of Augsburg (Minn.)
  • Lost a 6-0 decision to Robert Beese of Augsburg (Minn.)

BW is back in action on Saturday, December 17 when it travels to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the annual Gator Boot Duals hosted by Luther (Iowa) College at McGavock High School.  The Yellow Jackets will face York (Pa.) College at 9 a.m., No. 8 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin at Whitewater at 10:45 a.m., No. 17 nationally ranked Alvernia (Pa.) College at 2:15 p.m. and No. 19 nationally ranked Olivet (Mich.) College at 4:00 p.m.
