No. 4 Men’s Wrestling Wins Third Straight OAC Championship

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's wrestling team won its third consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Championship as it defeated the University of Mount Union by a final score of 37-3 in the Timken Gymnasium inside the McPherson Academic and Athletic Center

BW (18-2, 7-0 OAC), who also defeated NCAA Division II Ashland University by a final score of 26-18, won its seventh league title in the last eight years.  The Yellow Jackets are one year away from tying their school-record of four straight conference crowns, which they set from 2015 to 2019.

  • 125-pounds:    Senior and No. 3 nationally ranked Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won a 20-5 technical fall over Sam Tillett
  • 133-pounds:   Junior and No. 3 nationally ranked Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.), who is this week's OAC Wrestler of the Week, won a 13-4 major decision over Drew Magness
  • 141-pounds:    Junior Academic All-OAC performer Robby Palmieri (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) won a 7-6 decision over Ambrose Boni
  • 149-pounds:    Junior All-American and No. 1 nationally ranked Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) won a 12-2 major decision over Darese Sparkman
  • 157-pounds:    Sophomore and No. 11 nationally ranked Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward) won a 4-0 decision over Nick Nettleton
  • 165-pounds:    Junior Academic All-OAC performer Hunter Kupniewski (North Royalton) loss an 8-4 decision to Chris Anderson
  • 174-pounds:    Senior Academic All-OAC performer Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) won a 6-3 decision over David Reinhart
  • 184-pounds:   Senior Academic All-OAC performer Griffin Rathburn (New Albany/Bishop Hartley) won an 8-1 decision over Nick Chaddock
  • 197-pounds:    Senior All-American and No. 4 nationally ranked Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) won by pinfall in 1:51 AJ Lunardi
  • 285-pounds:    Senior Academic All-OAC performer Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) won by forfeit.

  • 174-pounds:    Hopkins lost a 4-2 decision to Nate Barrett
  • 184-pounds:    Sophomore Jack Cain (Springfield/Shawnee) lost by pinfall in 2:21 to Daniel Beemer
  • 197-pounds:    Byrne won by pinfall in 5:22 to Kaine Morris
  • 285-pounds:    Werts lost a 4-0 decision to Ty Petrey 

BW is back in action on Saturday and Sunday, February 25 and 26 when it travels to Cleveland to compete in the NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships hosted by Case Western Reserve University in the Veale Athletic Center.  Wrestling begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Sunday's action slated to start at 11 a.m. 

The NCAA Division III National Championships will be contested on Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11 at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
