Gibbs Named NWCA Tournament Coach of the Year, Staff Named NWCA Tournament Assistant Coaches of the Year

ROANOKE, Va.  -- Baldwin Wallace University Head Men's Wrestling Coach Jamie Gibbs was named the 2023 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Men's Wrestling National Tournament Coach of the Year while Associate Head Coach Jason Zastrow and the rest of the staff were named the 2023 NWCA Division III Men's Wrestling National Tournament Assistant Coaches of the Year.

Gibbs, Zastrow and the entire staff earn the awards after BW finished in a school-best third place at the NCAA Division III Championsips last weekend.  In addition to the third place finish, Gibbs, Zastrow and the entire staff and the coaching staff mentored the 149-pound champion in Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), the 125-pound national runner-up in Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), the 133-pound third place finisher and All-American Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.), the 197-pound fifth place finisher and All-American Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) and four other qualifiers in senior 141-pounder Zak Anderson (Elyria/Midview), All-Ohio Athletic Conference 157-pounder Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward), senior All-OAC, Academic All-OAC Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC 285-pounder Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute).

Gibbs, who completed his 12th season at the helm, along with his coaching staff have mentored 21 All-Americans, including 12 in the last three seasons, two individual champions and 10 top five placers.

Earlier this season, Gibbs, Zastrow and the entire staff were named the OAC Coaching Staff for the second straight season.
