BW Freshman All-American Mitch Supan Competes at USA Junior Nationals

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University All-American freshman thrower Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) competed at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships that was held June 23-27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Supan placed 14th in the discus with a throw of 169 feet and 10 inches. He also finished 20th in the hammer with a mark of 168'10" in an event that saw the American junior record fall.

"The entire week was incredible," said Supan. "Seeing such an accomplished group of athletes and competing toe-to-toe with them was awesome."

BW assistant coaches Eric Schmuhl and Jarrod Davis were quite pleased with Supan's performance.

"We felt he competed above and beyond considering he is only a freshman and was on the biggest stage in American track & field," said Schmuhl.

"Throughout the week, Mitch was inspired by the presence of our Olympians and it should will give him a psychological edge going into his sophomore season," continued Schmuhl. "It was great that we were able to do this for Mitch and I feel like this will lead to future BW athletes going after these opportunities."

Supan agreed with Schmuhl's assessment.

"I think it will give me an edge next year psychologically," noted Supan. "I saw what I was up against and it's going to make me work harder and put all of my efforts into my training."

Earlier this year, Supan earned All-American honors in the discus with an eighth-place throw of 165'2" at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet that was hosted by BW in late May.
