Baldwin Wallace Men Finish First at Greater Cleveland Championship Meet in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's indoor track and field team placed first at the Greater Cleveland Championship Meet tonight (Friday, February 19, 2010) on the Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea.  The meet was the last home meet of the indoor season.

The BW men scored 171 points to take the team title, 26 points clear of second-place John Carroll University. 

Two BW men's throwers set school records in the meet. Junior Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/Watkins Memorial) won the weight throw with a school-record throw of 59 feet, seven and three quarter inches. This was the third time this season that Phipps reset his own school record in the weight throw as he bettered his mark from last Saturday's All-Ohio Meet by more than a foot. Senior Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve)won the shot put with a throw of 53'9.25", a season-best and an indoor school record in the shot for Patrick. The previous record was set by Alex Johnson in 2004 at 52'11".

Also for the men, sophomore Mike Smith (Wintersville) won the long jump with a leap of 20 '11.25". The 4x200 meter relay team of junior Drew Matak (Salem/Senior), sophomore Stewart Pozzuto (Washington, Pa./Trinity), Smith and sophomore Dan Sloat (Medina/Senior) ran a time of 1:32.84, good for first place.Matak also won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.55.

Highlighting the meet for the women was senior Erin Norton (Lakewood/Senior) winning the weight throw with a school-record throw of 50'0.75". The previous mark 48'2" set by Megan McDannel in 2005.

Also for the women, senior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) won the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:39.12. FreshmanStephanie Shockley (Tiffin) won the pole vault with a mark of 9'06.25". Junior Carrie Ritzler(Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) won the high jump with a mark of 4'9.75"and junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville (West Muskingum) won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:05.03.

The Yellow Jacket multi-event athletes compete tomorrow at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are next weekend, Feb. 26-27 at Marietta College.
