BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's track and field teams competed at the 25th Annual Toledo Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo on Friday, May 1, 2009. The meet was unscored.
On the men's side, sophomore Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) placed first in the discus throw and improved his national provisional qualifying mark with a career-best toss of 163'5". Phipps also captured first in the hammer throw with a career-best 171'1". Junior Brandon Fast (Ashland/ Senior)placed first in the javelin with a throw of 165'10", junior Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) took second in the discus with a career-best 162'6" and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 52'6.5" and junior Brett Scarl (North Olmsted) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 151'8". Junior John Geretz (Port Clinton/ Huron) placed fifth in the long jump with a season-best distance of 21'2", senior Mike Kowal (Parma/ Senior) ran a season-best 50.76 and placed eighth in the 400-meter dash and sophomore Josh Bowen (Fremont/ Ross) recorded a season-best pole vault of 13'1.5".
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, May 8 at the 2009 Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny (Pa.) College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. BW also competes at the North Central (Ill.) College "Last Chance" Meet in Naperville, Illinois on Friday, May 15. The NCAA Division III Championships will be held on May 21-23 at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
Three Yellow Jackets, Patrick, Phipps and junior decathlete Steve Price (North Olmsted) have already qualified for the DIII national meet.
