BW Men Stand Second and Women Fourth After Day One of OAC Championship Meet in Wilmington

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's track and field teams completed the first day of competition today (Friday, April 24, 2009) at the two-day Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet at host Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.  After six scored events for men and women, the Yellow Jacket men are solidly in second place with 51.50 points and are just 1.5 points off the lead. The women stand in fourth place with 29 points.

Highlighting the first day of competition for BW were sophomore thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial), who won an individual title in the men's discus with a throw of 154-feet and five inches. In addition, the women's 4 x 800-meter relay team of senior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood), freshman Julie Kotesovec (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), sophomore Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) and junior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) brought home top honors in a season-best time of 9:23.49 overall.

In addition for the men, junior Steve Price (North Olmsted) earned All-OAC accolades in the javelin with a second place finish with a career-best throw of 185'11" and in the long jump with a third place finish at a leap of 21'4". Junior Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) was second in the men's discus with a throw of 152'5" and senior Theresa Carona (Massillon/ Perry) was third in the women's javelin with a season-best throw of 121'10". The top three finishers in each event earn All-OAC honors.

Others finishing in the top eight of an event and scoring points were junior Brandon Fast (Ashland/ Senior)placing fourth in the javelin with a seson-best throw of 172'10", the men's 4 x 800-meter relay team of senior Nate Bowen (Fremont/ Ross), freshman Tom Wilkin (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty), freshman Drew Beck (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandagua Academy) and junior Jimmy Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) was fourth in a season-best time of 7:52.56, junior John Geretz (Port Clinton/ Huron) was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20'10.5", sophomore Matt Kromer (Parma/ Senior) was fifth in the discus at 141'8", 

In terms of preliminary events on Friday, Price qualified and seeded fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 16.05.  Sophomore sprinter Drew Matak (Salem/ Senior) is qualified and seeded fourth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.25-second timing. Matak and Geretz also qualified for the 200-meter dash. Matak is seeded second with a preliminary time of 22.16 seconds and Geretz is seeded sixth with a 22.86 seconds.  Senior hurdler Alan Kidon's (Chardon) 56.17-second timing in the 400-meter hurdles has him seeded fourth.

The second day of competition will begins on Saturday, April 25 with the field events at 10:00 a.m.
