BW's Kevin Phipps Places Seventh in Discus Throw for First Career All-American Finish

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University sophomore thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) placed seventh in the discus throw to earn All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio. Phipps picks up his first piece of All-American hardware and becomes only the second male in school history to achieve All-America status in the discus throw.

Phipps qualified for the finals with a preliminary round throw of 157 feet, seven inches, and hit a mark of 160'11" in his third throw of the final round. He is the first Yellow Jacket to reach the podium in the event since Clint Cuny in 1975.

This was Phipps' first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He competed in the indoor championships in mid-March but did not make the cut in the weight throw.

Also competing in the discus, junior Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) threw 150'10"but missed the cut. Patrick was recently named the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year and will compete in the shot put tomorrow (Saturday, May 23) at 12:00 p.m.

Junior Steve Price (North Olmsted) competed on the second and final day of the men's decathlon and placed 12thPrice entered the final event in seventh place but slipped several spots after finishing 15th in the 1,500-meter run. Earlier in the day, he placed seventh in the pole vault portion of the event and sixth in the javelin throw.
