Men's Swimming and Diving Win Season Opener Against Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team start the 2022-23 season with a victory over Wilmington College by a final score of 104-100 in the Wilmington Natatorium.

BW (1-0) won 5 out of 11 events, with 5 runner-ups as it defeated Wilmington by a final score of 104-100. 

The Yellow Jackets individual highlights included: 

  • Sophomore Tommie McQueary (Batavia/Bethel Tate) won the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:00.09 and placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:11.45
  • Sophomore Jason Tafoya (El Paso, Texas) won the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2:25.00
  • Sophomore Austin Kingsley (Northport, N.Y.) won the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 4:25.72 and placed second in the 200-meter freestyle in a time of 2:05.78 
  • Sophomore Gannon Mellett (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon Area) placed second in the 800-meter freestyle in a time of 9:37.22
  • Junior Mason Kooyman (Concord Township / Chardon) finished second in the 50-meter freestyle and placed third in the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 57.46 seconds
  • Freshman Nolan Szuch (Springboro) won the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 1:05.79

BW relays were highlighted by:

  • The 200-medley relay squad of Tafoya, senior Alec McNeill (Avon Lake), McQueary, and Kooyman won in a time of 1:54.09
  • The 200-freestyle relay team of Kingsley, sophomore Tyson Swihart (Sarasota, Fla. / Sarasota Military Academy), Mellett, and senior Austin Olsavsky (Medina) finished second in a time of 1:43.33

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, October 21 when they host Hiram College, Franciscan University of Steubenville and Bluffton University for the BW Fall Duals inside the BW Natatorium at 6 p.m.
