BW Men Defeat Wilmington; Women Fall to Quakers in OAC Opener

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both competed against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College in Berea today (October 31, 2009) in the OAC opener for both teams.  The men won 155-49 while the women were defeated 129-61.

The men improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in OAC dual meets, while the women fell to 0-2 and 0-1 in the OAC.

On the men's side, senior All-OAC performer Vince Colwell (Parma/ Normandy), sophomore Nic Null (Shelby/ Mansfield St. Peter's),  junior Matt Diamond (Ashtabula/ Lakeside), and junior Mike Demitrieff (Parma/ Normandy) placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.55. In the men's 1000-yard freestyle Mike Diamond (Ashtabula/ Lakeside) won with a time of 11:23.65. In the 200-yard freestyle junior Hector Diaz (El Paso, Texas/ Cathedral) with a time 1:54.06. In the 50 yard freestyle Demitrieff won in a time of 23.55 seconds. In the 200-yard individual medley junior Ryan Musille (Canton/ Glenoak) won the event in a time of 2:08.76. For the 100-yard butterfly Demitrieff finished first in 56.98 seconds. In the 100-yard freestyle senior Jordan Irwin (Westerville/ Westerville South) won in a time of 51.25 seconds. In the 100-yard backstroke freshman Louis Runge (Avon) finished first with a time of 59.92 seconds. In the 500-yard freestyle senior Mark Andrasek (Parma/ Normandy) won in a time of 5:19.03. In the 100-yard breaststroke Musille won with a time of 1:03.42. And in the 200-yard freestyle relay Colwell, Irwin, Diaz, and Musille took first with a time of 1:33.95.

In the one-meter dive, junior All-American Todd Richert (North Royalton) won with a score of 181.15.

On the women's side for swimming, in the 50-yard freestyle freshman Gabby Parker (Girard, Pa./ Villa Maria Academy) won in a time 26.89 seconds. In the 200-yard freestyle relay junior Lauren Schaefer (Westlake), freshman Kelsey Richards (Wadsworth), sophomore Katie Cvelbar (South Euclid/ Regina), and Parker won with a time of 1:47.51. In the 100-yard freestyle Schaefer won with a time of 59.22 seconds.

For the women's diving team, freshman Julie Pinter (Broadview Hts./Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) won with a final score of 172.30 in the one-meter dive.

The Yellow Jackets men's and women's swimming and diving teams next compete on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in a tri-meet with Penn State Behrend and St. Vincent (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.
