Clutch Shooting Leads Men’s Basketball Past Wilmington

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team were led by clutch shooting as they took down Wilmington College in the first game of an Ohio Athletic Conference men's and women's doubleheader by a final score of 83-82 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

BW Leaders (3-3, 1-1 OAC)

  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jake Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) led the way with a game high tying 21 points, six assists and five rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) added 21 points and three steals.

Wilmington Leaders (3-3, 0-1 OAC)

  • Obed Achirem posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Lucas Doty added 12 points off the bench.

First Half (BW 43-42)

  • The Quakers got on the board first with two free throws by Achirem.
  • The teams traded buckets until a Yellow Jackets forced a Wilmington timeout with BW holding a 15-10 lead.
  • The two teams traded buckets for the next 10 minutes with the Yellow Jackets holding an eight point lead.
  • A 7-0 Quakers run with 2:01 left cut the BW lead at 38-37.
  • Wilmington was able to tie things up with 1:23 left in the half at 40-40.
  • Snyder broke the tie with a three with 30 seconds left in the half.
  • Abdul hit a layup at the buzzer to go into halftime with BW leading 43-42.
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led all scorers at the half with 13 points.
  • Junior forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) and freshman guard Landon Potopsky (Strasburg) led the defense with two steals each. Watson III added a block.
  • Achirem led the Quakers with eight points and six rebounds.
  • Abdul added seven points.

Second Half (BW 83-82)

  • Simmons got the scoring started in the half with a layup.
  • Wilmington came out hot from behind the arc as they knocked three consecutive threes to take a four point lead.
  • The Quakers went on an 8-0 run with 11:31 left to take a 65-57 lead.
  • A late 7-0 run from the Yellow Jackets highlighted by a Snyder three gave BW the lead 79-78 with 1:23 left in the game.
  • Snyder added another jump shot to give the Yellow Jackets a three point.
  • A dunk by senior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) settled the game as BW went back up three.
  • Wilmington missed a three and Achirem followed with an offensive rebound and layup but it wasn't enough as BW walked out with 83-82 victory.
  • Snyder led all scorers in the half with 15 points, he added three rebounds and two assists.
  • Price added 13 points as he made eight of nine free throws.
  • Doty led the Quakers with 12 second half points.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 10 when they travel to Marietta to take on Marietta College in the first game on an OAC men's and women's doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. inside the Ban Johnson Arena.
