CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -– In its first road game of the season, the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball fell to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) by a final score of 66-57 in its first game of the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Wabash College on Chadwick Court.
BW (1-1) Leaders
- Senior all-OAC and all-Academic OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led all scorers with a game-high 19 points.
- Senior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
- Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) tallied 11 points.
- Senior all-OAC guard Jake Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) contributed a team-high five assists.
Rose-Hulman (1-1) Leaders
- Senior guard Max Chaplin led the Fightin' Engineers with 14 points
- Sophomore forward Miles McGowen recorded a double-double, recording 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds
- Junior guard Bradley Harden contributed 12 points
- Senior guard Willie Bowman added 10 points.
First Half (Rose-Hulman, 31-18)
- Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting a combined 6-for-36 from the field to start the game.
- Back-to-back buckets and a tradition three-point play from Mazzeo brought the Jackets to within two at 11-9 with 7:30 remaining in the half.
- Rose-Hulman responded with an 11-0 run to take a 22-9 lead with 5:11 remaining
- Mazzeo buried a deep three to bring the Yellow Jackets within single digits (26-18) at the 1:27 mark
- Mazzeo led all scorers with ten first-half points, but BW trailed 31-18 at the half.
Second Half (Rose-Hulman, 66-57)
- Simmons jumpstarted BW's offense in the second half with four points in quick succession.
- Freshman guard Ray Ellington (Westlake) drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 37-32 with 14:02 to play.
- The Fightin' Engineers extended their advantage to 48-38 with 9:30 remaining.
- After Rose-Hulman went up 52-39, Price converted on a fast break to cap off a stretch of seven answered points for the Yellow Jackets to cut the deficit to 52-46 with 3:52 left in the game.
- Ellington kept BW in the game with a three to get BW within 61-55 with a minute to play.
- The Fightin' Engineers put the game away from the free throw line, adding five points from the charity stripe in the final minute to cement the 66-57 victory.
BW is back in action on Saturday, November 19 for the second final day of the Great Lakes Invitational with a game against Benedictine (Ill.) University at 3:00 p.m.
