Men’s Basketball Earns NABC Academic Excellence Award, Five Student-Athletes Garner Accolade

KANSAS CITY, Mo.  – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team has been recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with a Team Academic Excellence award while five student-athletes have been named to the Honors Court.

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men's basketball programs that completed the 2022-23 academic year with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

BW, who was one of 300 programs to earn the honor, had a team grade point average of 3.324.

Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson), senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jake Snyder (Stow/Akron Archbishop Hoban), junior guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School), junior forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) and junior forward Wyatt Flynn (Independence) were the five of over 1,800 student-athletes to earn the accolade. 

Mazzeo, who garners his second straight honor, carried a 3.842 grade point average in accounting.  This season, he led the team and was second in the OAC with a career-best 18.8 points-per-game.  Mazzeo was second on the team with 5.3 rebounds-per-contest and was second on the squad with 52 assists.  He also tallied 20 steals and a career-high six blocks.  In his career, Mazzeo appeared in 84 games with 78 starts.  He averaged 15.7 points-per-game and 4.3 rebounds-per-contest.  He recorded 161 assists, 59 steals and 16 blocks.  Off the court, he was a three-time Academic All-OAC performer, College Sports Communicators All-District Team selection, a Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar, and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Snyder, who earns his first accolade, carried a 3.617 grade point average in sport management.  This season, he was third on the team with 12.0 points per game.  Snyder led the squad and was second in the OAC with a career-best 110 assists.  He led the team with 26 steals and was fourth in rebounding with 87.  For his career, Snyder appeared in 78 games with 57 starts.  He averaged 10.4 points per-game and 3.4 rebounds-per-contest.  Snyder tallied 224 assists, 76 steals and 19 blocks.  Off the court, he was a two-time Academic All-OAC performer, College Sports Communicators All-District Team selection, a Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar, and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Driscoll, who garners his first honor, carries a 3.979 grade point average in sport management.  This season, he played in 25 games with three starts.  Driscoll scored 125 points and grabbed 41 rebounds.  He also had 24 assists, 12 steals and a career-best six blocks.  In his career, Driscoll has appeared in 57 games with five starts.  He has tallied 266 points, 109 rebounds, 61 assists, 32 steals and eight blocks.  Off the court, Driscoll is a two-time Academic All-OAC performer, College Sports Communicators All-District Team selection, a Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar, and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Watson III, who earns his first accolade, carries a 3.521 grade point average in sport management.  This season, he recorded 75 points, 40 rebounds, 20 assists, 10 blocks and a career-best eight steals.  For his career, Watson III has appeared in 54 games and has tallied 193 points, 129 rebounds, 33 blocks, 30 assists and 16 steals.  Off the court, he is a Dean's List student and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma and Lambda Pi Eta Communication honoraries.

Flynn, who garners his first honor, carries a 3.451 grade point average in computer science.  This season, he appeared in two games and recorded three points and three rebounds.  In his career, Flynn has appeared in six games and has tallied five points and four rebounds.  Off the court, he is an Academic All-OAC selection and a Dean's List student. 

The Yellow Jackets finished the 2022-23 campaign with a with a 12-13 overall record and an 8-10 mark in the OAC.
