Men’s Basketball Falls in Close Contest to Trine (Ind.)

BEREA, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team hosted Trine (Ind.) University in the first game of a men's and women's tripleheader in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets dropped a nailbiter to the Thunder by a final score of 62-60.

BW Leaders (5-6)

  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, scoring all 20 points over the final 22 minutes of the game.
  • Sophomore forward Zoltan Nagy (Lakewood/St. Edward) recorded a career-high 13 rebounds.
  • Senior all-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic all-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) added 15 points and 5 rebounds. 

Trine Leaders (10-1)

  • Senior forward Brent Cox led the Thunder with a team-high 18 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Senior guard Connor Jones added 15 points.
  • Junior forward Emmanuel Megnanglo recorded a team-high 9 rebounds while adding 8 points. 

1st Half (30-23 Trine)

  • Trine led 11-9 midway through the first half as both teams struggled to find their rhythm on offense.
  • The Thunder extended their lead to 24-14 after a 9-0 run, forcing a BW timeout with 4:06 left in the half.
  • Price tallied 6 points in the final 1:29 of the half, bringing the Yellow Jackets within 5, but Trine's buzzer-beating jumper put the Thunder up 30-23 at the break.
  • Mazzeo led all scorers with 10 first-half points.

2nd Half (62-60 Trine)

  • Sophomore forward Jarred Logan's (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) first career points pulled BW within 4 (34-30) with 15:51 to play.
  • Price capped off an 11-2 BW run with a corner three, giving the Yellow Jackets a 37-36 lead with 13:46 left on the clock.
  • Trailing 56-48 with 4:44 remaining, BW battled back with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one.
  • After going down 61-57 with under a minute to play, an intentional foul against the Thunder gave BW a lifeline, and three points on the ensuing possession made it a 61-60 game with 13 seconds left.
  • BW regained possession trailing 62-60 with 11 seconds left, but Mazzeo's potential game-tying jumper fell short at the buzzer.
  • Price led all scorers with 14 second-half points.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Wednesday, January 4 to host the University of Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
