Men's Basketball's Comeback Comes Up Short Against Capital

Berea, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team fell to Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference match by a final score of 58-56 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW Leaders (7-10, 3-5 OAC)

  • Senior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points, nine rebounds, and one assist. 
  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) added eight points, two assists, and two rebounds. 
  • With seven points and four rebounds was freshman guard Ray Ellington (Westlake). 

CAP Leaders (8-7, 4-4 OAC)

  • The leader for Capital was Kaleb Crawford who tallied 15 points.
  • Griffin Doseck added 12 points, three assists, and five rebounds. 

First Half (CAP 40-34)

  • Capital was first to the basket, but the Yellow Jackets responded when Simmons made a three to put BW on the board. 
  • Back-and-forth action ensued until Capital went on a 9-0 run to take a six-point advantage over the Yellow Jackets, who then took a timeout. 
  • Price tied the score at 25-25 with 6:22 left to go in the half.
  • The Comets then went on a 10-4 run to claim the lead at 40-34 going into half-time. 
  • BW was led by Simmons in the first half who tallied 10 points, three rebounds, and one assist. 
  • Ryan Suever led Capital with 11 points, three rebounds, and one assist. 

Second Half (CAP 58-56)

  • Capital started off the second half with a free throw. The Yellow Jackets were slow to the basket until Sophomore forward Jarred Logan (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) made a layup at 14:34.
  • The Comets worked to extend their lead, but BW refused to allow them to reach a double-digit lead until 9:14 when Capital made a pair of free throws to put them ahead 51-41.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded by going on a 11-2 run, cutting Capital's lead to one with 3:45 left to go in the game. 
  • With :39 left to go, Price received a pass from Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) and made a layup to give BW its first lead of the half. 
  • A layup and a free throw from Capital gave them the last three points to claim the victory by final score of 58-56. 
  • Simmons was again the leader for the Yellow Jackets in the half with six points and six rebounds.
  • Capital was led by Kaleb Crawford in the second half with seven points. 

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, January 18th when they travel to University Heights to face crosstown rival John Carroll University in an OAC game. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. on Mike Moran Court inside Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
