Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 9 John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball fell to No. 9 nationally ranked and crosstown rival John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup by a final score of 96-91 on the Mike Moran Court inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. 

BW Leaders (7-8, 3-5 OAC) 

  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/ Massillon Jackson) led the way with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/ Bay) added 16 points.
  • Sophomore guard Jarred Logan (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) added 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. 

John Carroll Leaders (13-2, 7-1 OAC)

  • Sophomore guard Luke Frazier scored a game high 36 points.
  • Junior forward Luka Eller posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

First Half (BW 56-47)

  • The Blue Streaks got on the board first with a pair of free throws by Luka Eller.
  • Snyder started out red hot hitting his first three shots and adding an assist on a senior forawrd Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) three to force a John Carroll timeout.
  • Mazzeo came out of the timeout with the hot hand as he knocked down three consecutive threes as the Yellow Jackets went on a 14-3 run to go up 27-14.
  • John Carroll was able to respond with a 7-2 run of their own with 9:51 left in the half to cut the BW lead to 33-25
  • The Blue Streaks went on 15-4 run to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to two at 42-40 with 4:58 left in the half.
  • BW ended the half on a 12-5 run to gain a nine point advantage going into the break.
  • Mazzeo led the way for the Yellow Jackets as he dropped 15 points on 6-10 shooting including a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc.
  • Snyder added 10 points on 4-6 from the field and 2-3 from three point range.
  • Frazier led both teams with 17 points.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 75% from three point range as they went 9-12.

Second Half (JCU 96-91)

  • John Carroll opened the half with a 7-0 run to tie things up.
  • Another 7-0 run by the Blue Streaks agave them a 69-62 lead.
  • A 6-0 run by BW cut the Blue Streaks lead to 81-77 with 6:45 left in the game.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to battle back as they cut the lead to one with a freshman forward Ray Ellington (Westlake) three with 47 seconds left.
  • Some late free throws by John Carroll extended the lead to five.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 21 when they travel to Wilmington to take on Wilmington College in the first game of an OAC men's and women's doubleheader inside the Fred Raizk Arena at 2:00.
