B-W Baseball Team Beats Anna Maria (Mass.), 8-4, in Final Game in Winter Haven, Florida

BEREA, OHIO -- A 14-hit attack helped the Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team to defeat Anna Maria (Mass.) College, 8-4, today (Saturday, March 13, 2010) in its final game on the team's annual Spring Break trip to Winter Haven, Florida.

The Yellow Jackets are now 4-4 overall and open northern play on Tuesday, March 23 when they host non-league rival Walsh University at Heritage Field on 'Bring Used Baseball Equipment Day' at 4:00 p.m. Please see more below about 'Bring Used Baseball Equipment Day' below. With its loss, Anna Maria falls to 4-2 overall.

The Yellow Jackets scored all of the runs they needed to win the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. They increased their lead to 5-0 with a single tally in the sixth and Anna Maria made the score 5-1 with a run of its own in the top of the seventh frame. The Jackets then put the game away with three in the bottom of the frame. AMC closed out the scoring with three runs in the top of the eighth.

At the plate, senior third baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) led the way by lacing three hits in five at-bats, including two doubles, and scoring a pair of runs.  The trio of senior 1B Chris Nealon (Avon Lake), senior shortstop Jim Martin (Euclid) and senior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/ Millbury Lake) each had a pair of safeties.  Chris Nealon was two-for-four with a run scored and two runs batted-in. Martin was two-for-four with a runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Rollins was two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound, senior Scott Luthman (Celina) started and pitched the first five innings to earn the win and improve to 1-1 overall and lower his earned run average to 2.00. He was followed to the mound by sophomore Josh Scott (Strongsville) in the sixth, sophomore Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) in the eighth and freshman David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The B-W versus Walsh game also is 'Donate Used Baseball Equipment Day' with all donated equipment being given to the Cleveland Municipal Baseball program. Following the Walsh game, B-W does not play again at home until April 8 against Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m.  The 'road trip' includes eight games at Malone University (March 24 at 4:00 p.m.), Lake Erie (March 26 at 3:30), Walsh (March 28 at 1:30), Hiram College (March 30 at 3:30), The College of Wooster (April 1 at 4:00), Marietta College (DH on April 3 at 1:00) and Division I Cleveland State University (April 6 at 4:00 at Avon Crushers Park).
