B-W Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Trine (Ind.) in Winter Haven

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split a doubleheader with Trine (Ind.) University today (Tuesday, March 9, 2010) on the team's annual Spring Break trip to Winter Haven, Florida. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 9-2, but fell in the nightcap, 10-4.

In game one, Trine threatened to score in the first inning with two runners in scoring position, but were turned away by a diving play from B-W senior first baseman Brian Boveington (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls).

The Yellow Jackets then jumped on the board with four runs in the second inning, two of which came on a double to deep center by senior catcher Matt Bush (Grafton/ Midview), and added three in the fourth and two in the sixth. Trine scored its two runs in the fifth.

At the plate, senior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/Millbury Lake) was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted-in. Senior third baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and junior outfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/Senior) was 2-for-4 with a double.

On the mound, sophomore Bill Bostelman (Marion/Harding) started and pitched the first five innings for his first career win. He allowed two runs and struck out three. Freshman Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) threw the final two innings and struck out a pair in his collegiate debut. 

In game two, Trine scored three times in the first, added single runs in the second third and fourth, then blew the game open with four in the fifth. B-W scored twice in the first and twice in the sixth.

At the plate, Nealon was 2-for-2 with two RBI and senior shortstop Jim Martin (Euclid) was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and two runs.

On the mound, freshman Brent Gaj (Stow/Kent Roosevelt) started and pitched the first three innings in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game versus Thomas More (Ky.) College at 2:30 p.m. B-W also plays a single game versus Wittenberg University on Thursday, March 11 at 9:30 a.m.
