B-W Baseball Team Splits with Muskingum and Gives Bob Fisher His 700th Career Victory

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Muskingum University today (Tuesday, May 4, 2010) at Heritage Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 7-0, to give veteran Head Coach Bob Fisher his 700th career victory. The Muskies took the nightcap, 19-5.

With the split, B-W moves to 12-21-1 overall and 6-9-1 in the OAC and closes out the season with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Capital University on Saturday, May 8 at Heritage Field. During the twinbill, the College will honor Coach Fisher who is retiring at the end of the season his 42nd. Muskingum improves to 20-16 overall and 9-7 in the OAC.

In game one, B-W scored first when freshman centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/Senior) singled, stole second and came all the way around to score on two throwing errors following the steal.

The Yellow Jackets added three runs in the third to make the score 4-0. Senior third baseman Jim Martin (Euclid) and senior first baseman Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) hit back-to-back RBI singles with two out and senior designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) reached on an error to plate Martin.


B-W added two more in the fourth when Chris Nealon hit another two-out single to score Neuschaefer and senior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/Millbury Lake). The Jackets scored once more in the sixth when sophomore shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) doubled and eventually scored on a 'suicide squeeze' by Rollins.

On the mound, senior Scott Luthman (Celina) dominated for his third complete game and first shutout of the season. He pitched seven innings, allowed four hits and one walk, and struck out three to improve to 4-2 for the year.

At the plate, Chris Nealon was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Neuschaefer was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.

In game two, the Muskingum bats came to life with nine straight hits to open the game and scored nine runs in the first inning en route to the 19-5 win.
 
B-W freshman Pat Havens (Twinsburg) was roughed up in his third start of the season and drops to 1-4 for the year.  Five other Yellow Jackets pitched in relief and sophomore Josh Stobinski (Ottawa Hills) was the most effective, throwing two and one-third innings of scoreless ball in his first collegiate appearance.

At the plate, Scott Nealon was 2-for-2, Chris Nealon was 3-for-5 with an RBI double, and Neuschaefer was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
