B-W Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene (Mass.); Scott Throws Shutout in Game 2

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College today (Monday, March 8, 2010) at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. The Yellow Jackets lost game one, 6-2, but rebounded behind a dominant pitching performance by sophomore Josh Scott (Strongsville) to win the nightcap, 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 1-2 overall heading into a twin bill versus Trine (Ind.) University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

In game one, B-W got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first before ENC scored four times in the bottom of the second and twice more in the fifth. The Yellow Jackets could only manage one more run in the seventh.

At the plate, junior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village) was 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base and senior first baseman Brian Boveington (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) was 2-for-3 with a double.

On the mound, senior Scott Luthman (Celina) started and pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out five. Senior Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) came on in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored the lone run in the bottom of the fifth when junior rightfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/ Senior) reached on a single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by freshman centerfielder Nolan Neuschafer (Elyria/Senior).

On the mound, Scott had his finest outing in the Brown & Gold, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing four hits and three walks while striking out a career-high nine batters.

At the plate, senior third baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) was 2-for-3 and Neuschafer was 1-for-3 with a steal.

Following tomorrow's DH versus Trine, the Jackets play Thomas More (Ky.) College on Wednesday, March 10 in a single, nine-inning game at 2:30 p.m.
