B-W Senior Pitcher Justin Novak and Outfielder Ted Cowling Named Academic All-OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College senior baseball pitcher Justin Novak (Strongsville) and senior outfielder Ted Cowling (Streetsboro) have been named as Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference student-athletes for recognition of their dual academic and athletic excellence. Novak is a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree.

Novak
, who carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in B-W's Masters of Business Administration in Accounting program and had a 3.97 undergraduate grade average, was a four-year starter in the Yellow Jacket pitching rotation. He has already signed a contract to work for the major accounting firm of Ernst & Young.

The ace of the Yellow Jacket pitching staff had a 4-4 record this season with 32 strikeouts in a team-leading 59 and one-third innings of work. He made nine appearances, all starting assignments, with six complete games and one shutout. He walked just four batters this season.  For his career, Novak made 34 appearances, including 22 starts, with nine complete games. He had a 9-10 record with 72 strikeouts in 159 and two-third innings pitched.

In the classroom, Novak is a Dean's List student, a member of the Alpha Lambda, Chi Alpha Sigma and Dayton C. Miller honor societies and a Jacket Scholar. In addition to being Academic All-OAC, he is a two-timeESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV selection, including this spring as a first-team choice. He currently appears on the national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ballot.  This spring, Novak received the Leadership Award at the annual Student-Athlete Awards Dinner at the College. He additionally has received the Guy Fisher Award for Academic Excellence in 2008 and is a member of the Accounting & Investment Club.

Cowling, who carried a 3.55 grade point average in sports medicine and pre-physical therapy and would like to enter the field of physical therapy or athletic training, was named Academic All-OAC for the first time in his career. He played his second season of baseball at the College after transferring to B-W from NCAA Division II Ashland University.

In one junior varsity and two varsity seasons, Cowling batted .305 (54-for-177) with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, two homeruns, 32 runs batted-in and two stolen bases in three attempts. As a senior, he had his best season as a collegian as he batted .300 (36-for-120) with 16 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, two homers, 24 RBI and a steal.

In the classroom, Cowling was a Dean's List student, a member of the Chi Sigma Alpha Honor Society and a Jacket Scholar.
