B-W Baseball Team Swept by Eighth-Ranked Heidelberg in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team lost both games of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with eighth-ranked (NCBWA) Heidelberg University this afternoon (Wednesday, April 21, 2010) at Heritage Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets lost game one, 4-3, and the nightcap, 24-5.

With the losses, B-W falls to 8-18 overall and 3-7 in the OAC and is back in action tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game versus traditional-rival Oberlin College at 4:30 p.m. in Berea. Heidelberg improves to 26-6 and 7-3 in the OAC.

In game one, Heidelberg went ahead 1-0 with a solo homerun by Gar Keen in the top of the first. The 'Berg' threatened to add to its lead in the third but was turned away when B-W freshman leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Josephs Collegiate Institute) laid out to make a spectacular diving catch down the line.

However, the Students Princes kept the pressure on and added two key runs with three hits in the fourth.

B-W got on the board in the fourth when senior designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) doubled and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls).Toughey then drove a double to left center to plate Longhitano.

The Jacket defense came through once again in the top of the fifth when senior second baseman Matt Rollins (Wallbridge/Millbury Lake) made a diving catch in short right center then doubled up a runner at second.

The Student Princes added an insurance run with two hits in the seventh to lead 4-2. B-W scored a two-out run on an error in the bottom of the inning but left the tying run on second as Heidelberg held on, 4-3.

On the mound, senior Justin Novak (Strongsville) started on short rest and pitched six and one-third innings to fall to 3-3. He allowed four runs (all earned) on 11 hits and struck out five. Senior Scott Luthman (Celina)came on in relief and recorded the final two outs in the seventh.

At the plate, freshman centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/Senior) was 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Senior rightfielder Ted Cowling (Streetsboro) also was 2-for-3.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored one in the first when Rollins doubled and scored on a single by senior third baseman Jim Martin (Euclid). The Student Princes took advantage of three walks and a hit batter to score three times in the second.  B-W got one in the third when Rollins singled, moved two bases on an error, and scored on another Martin single.

Heidelberg then opened the game up with five runs in the fourth and eight in the sixth.

On the mound, freshman David Redovian (Copley) started and went the first two innings to fall to 0-2 for the year.
