B-W Baseball Team Falls versus Division I Cleveland State, 7-6, at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team fell at NCAA Division I Cleveland State University, 7-6, this afternoon (Tuesday, April 6, 2010) at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets drop to 6-10 overall and return to action this Thursday, April 8 in their home opener versus Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Field in Berea. With their win, the Vikings improve to 6-17.

B-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) hit a ground rule double that plated freshman centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/ Senior) and senior third basemanJim Martin (Euclid) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior 2B Matt Rollins (Walbridge/Millbury Lake).

The Vikings got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the inning before the Jackets added two more in the third. Martin singled home senior 1B Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) who eventually scored later in the frame on a double steal. CSU got back in the game with one in its half of the third and then tied the score with back-to-back homeruns in the sixth.

The Vikings then took their first lead with a run in the seventh before B-W tied things in the eighth when Chris Nealon scored on a groundout by freshman outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Josephs Collegiate Institute). However, CSU once again answered and scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the inning when Chuck Gasti hit a two-run homer � his second of the game. The Jackets got a run in the top of the ninth when Scott Nealon singled home Rollins.

At the plate, senior outfielder Ted Cowling (Streetsboro) was 3-for-4, Scott Nealon was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Martin was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Chris Nealon was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.  

On the mound, freshman Pat Havens (Twinsburg) suffered the loss after pitching one inning out of the bullpen and striking out two. Freshman David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) started and pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five without surrendering a walk. Senior Brian Boveington (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and freshman Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) also pitched in relief.

Following its game versus CWRU on Thursday, the Jackets host Ohio Athletic Conference and cross-town rival John Carroll University on Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m.
