Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Swept in Doubleheader at Mount Union

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team lost both games of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at rival Mount Union College this afternoon (Wednesday, April 14, 2010) at 23rd Street Field in Alliance. The Yellow Jackets dropped game one, 11-2, and lost the nightcap, 9-7.

B-W falls to 7-14 overall and 2-4 in the OAC and is right back in action tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game at cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m. in University Circle. Mount Union improves to 13-10 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. 

In game one, Mount Union got on the board quickly with a single run in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets evened the score when senior first baseman Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) scored on a fielder's choice by junior leftfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/Senior) in the second, but the Raiders quickly answered with three runs on three hits in their half of the inning.
 
B-W scored once in the fifth on a double by freshman centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/Senior) but eventually left the bases loaded. The Raiders then opened the game up with one in the fifth and six in the sixth.
 
At the plate for B-W, Nealon was 2-for-3 with a run scored. On the mound, sophomore Josh Scott (Strongsville) started and pitched five innings to fall to 1-2 for the season.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored four times in the second inning with key RBI hits coming from Neuschaefer and junior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village). After the Raiders scored a run in the third, BW added three more in the fifth with a two-run single by senior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/Millbury Lake) serving as the key hit.

Mount Union then took advantage of an error, four walks and a hit batter to score four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 7-5, the Raiders then scored once in the sixth, twice in the seventh, and once more in the eighth to complete the 9-7, comeback win.

At the plate for B-W, Ulanski was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored, senior designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) was 2-for-4 with a run, Neuschaefer was 2-for-6, and sophomore shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) had two runs scored and two RBI.

On the mound, freshman Pat Havens (Twinsburg) tossed two innings in relief and was saddled with the loss.Senior Brian Boveington (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) pitched one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen, allowed one run, and struck out three. Freshman David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) started and pitched four and two-third innings and allowed three earned runs.

Following tomorrow's game at CWRU, B-W gets back into OAC action with a twinbill at Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m. in Ada.
