Baseball Team Defeats Oberlin, 9-1, in Oberlin; Play at Marietta on Saturday

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated non-league and traditional rival Oberlin College, 9-1, today (Thursday, April 23, 2009) in Oberlin. The win was B-W's 15th in its last 24 contests.

B-W is now 17-15 overall and next plays on Saturday when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. at Pioneer Park. With its loss, Oberlin is now 14-23 overall.

The Yeoman jumped out to 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Yellow Jackets countered with four runs of their own in the top of the third inning to lead 4-1. B-W scored four more runs in the top of the sixth inning to increased its advantage to 8-1 and added its final run in the seventh to lead 9-1.

Highlighting the game offensively were senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Riley Kreisher (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington).  Kreisher drove in his 50th run of the season to tie Pat Shannon's '03 single-season school-record for runs batted-in. Kidd tallied two hits in five at-bats, drove in one run and scored twice.  His two runs give him 136 for his career and ties former Academic All-American and Cleveland Indians farmhand Erik Young's '89 school career record.

In addition to Kreisher and Kidd, junior shortstop Jimmy Martin (Euclid) went two-for-three,  including his first homerun of the season.  He drove in two runs and scored two more.  Junior second baseman Scott Nealon (Avon Lake), junior designated hitter Ted Cowling (Streetsboro) and senior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) all had two-hit games.  The trio also combined for three runs scored and four runs batted-in.

On the mound, freshman righthanded pitcher Colin Wright (Lorain/ Admiral King) started and pitched the first three innings to even his record to 1-1.  He gave up just four hits and one earned run.  Freshman righty Josh Scott (Strongsville) worked the next three innings and gave up one hit and struck out two batters.  Freshman lefthander Chris Sauber (Tiffin/ Columbian) pitched the seventh inning and gave up one hit. Freshman righthander Bill Bostleman (Marion/ Harding) pitched the eighth and ninth innings and closed out the game by giving up one hit and fanning one batter.

After Saturday's OAC doubleheader against Marietta, the Yellow Jackets will return to Berea to host Hiram College on Tuesday, April 28 at 4:00 p.m. for Seniors' Day.  B-W will then close out the season with road games at Notre Dame College on Thursday, April 30 at 2:00  p.m. and at Wilmington College for an OAC doubleheader on Saturday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m.
