BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket baseball team opened its 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference schedule today (Saturday, March 21) by dropping a doubleheader to Muskingum College, 2-1 in the first game and 10-0 in the nightcap.
With its two losses, B-W falls to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. With the victories, Muskingum improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
In the first game, B-W took a 1-0 lead when it scored in the third inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by senior two-time All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) that brought home sophomore catcherRyan Nordquist (Alliance/ Senior), who led off the inning with a single. Nordquist moved to second via a single by senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington). Then both Nordquist and Kidd advanced to second and third, respectively, when junior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/ Milbury Lake) drew a walk to load the bases.
Muskingum tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning with an unearned run and took the lead in the seventh inning to secure the 2-1 victory.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior two-time Academic All-OAC rightfielder Mike Brisky (Berea)with two hits, including a double. Kidd and Nordquist had B-W's other two hits.
On the mound, Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) pitched well but suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 overall. He pitched all seven innings, allowed just five bases hits, two runs (one earned), struck out six and walked four.
In the second game, the Fighting Muskies jumped on B-W righthander Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) for three runs in the first inning and one more in the second for a 4-0 advantage. Jaskowak was followed to the mound by junior righty Scott Luthman (Celina) and junior righty Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) in the seventh when the Muskies scored five times to put the game away. MC added its final run, an uneared tally off of Nealon in the eighth. Overall, Nealon pitched two and two-third innings and allowed just the one unearned run.
Offensively, B-W again had just four base hits with Kidd recording a pair of singles, Nealon�s twin bother, junior 2B Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) rapping a double and junior designated hitter Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) getting a single.
B-W's next game is against Lake Erie College on March 25 at 3:30 in Berea. Six of the Yellow Jackets next seven games are at home including contests against OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on March 28, NAIA foe Walsh University on March 29, Cleveland traditional rival Case Western Reserve University on March 31 and versus NCAA powerhouse The College of Wooster on April 2.
