Baseball Team Splits With Waynesburg (Pa.); Plays St. Joseph's (N.Y.) in Florida Finale on Saturday

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team, now 3-6 overall, split a doubleheader today (Friday, March 13, 2009) with Waynesburg (Pa.) College on the sixth day of its annual spring break trip to Winter Haven, Florida. At the RussMatt Classic, Waynesburg won the first game 8-7 and B-W came back to capture the nightcap, 3-2.

In the first game, B-W took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and extended it to 2-0 with another tally in the second. Waynesburg scored twice in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 2-2. A four-run Yellow Jacket outburst in the fourth game them a 6-2 advantage but Waynesburg countered with three runs of its own in the fifth to close to within 6-5. Each team scored once in the sixth and the game went to the final frame with B-W on top 7-6. But Waynesburg scored twice in the bottom of the final inning to gain its win.

Offensively, senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-America centerfieldr Cody Kidd (Wellington), junior second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/ Millbury Lake) and senior 3B Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) each had a pair of hits. Gross also had three runs batted-in and reached bae all four times he batted. On the mound, senior righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) took the loss to fall to 0-2.

In the second game, B-W again took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Waynesburg tied it at 1-1 with a tally in the fifth. BW scored its winning runs in the sixth when sophomore leftfielder Sam Wasylyshyn (North Ridgeville) singled to open the inning. After two groundouts moved him to third, Waynesburg walked No.3 hitter, senio 1B Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) to set up a force out. But sophomore rightfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/ Senior) spoiled the plan by doubling and scoring bothWasylyshyn and Kreisher for a 3-1 lead. Waynesburg scored once in seventh before sophomore reliever Josh Scott (Strongsville) put out the fire and gained his first collegiate save.

In addition to Scott, junior righty Justin Novak (Strongsville) pitched five strong innings, allowed five hits and a run (earned) with three strikeouts to gain the win and improve to 2-0. Scott came in to pitch the sixth and seventh innings. Junior designated hitter Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) led the hitters with a pair of base hits.

B-W is back in action tomorrow for the final time in Florida this season when it plays St. Joseph's (N.Y.) UNiversity in a single game at 9:30 a.m.
