BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated seventh-ranked The College of Wooster, 17-8, today (Thursday, April 2) in a single, nine-inning game at Heritage Field in Berea. The win was the fifth in the last six games for the Yellow Jackets and marks the second straight season that B-W beat the national powerhouse.

 

With its win, B-W is now 9-9 overall and next plays on Saturday, April 4 when it travels to Ada, Ohio and plays Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. With its loss, Wooster falls to 20-4 overall.

 

Wooster opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning and B-W came right back with a pair of its own to tie the score at 2-2. The Jackets then gained a 5-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Scots came right back with five more unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.

 

Undaunted, B-W scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 8-7 after five frames. Wooster scored its final run, again of the unearned variety in the sixth to tie the score at 8-8. After that point, it was all B-W as the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the sixth, two more in the seventh and broke the contest open with a five-run eighth.

 

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets outhit the Fighting Scots, 19-11. Leading the way was senior two-time All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) with four hits, including two doubles and a homerun and he had five runs batted-in. In addition, senior ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American centerfielderCody Kidd (Wellington), junior LF Ben Stoper (Medina/ Senior), junior designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) and senior 3B Jake Gross (Farmington/ Warren Champion) each had three hits.

 

On the mound, senior righthanded pitcher Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) started and worked the first six innings to win his first game of the season against three losses. He allowed 10 hits and the eight unearned runs, struck out one and walked two batters. He was followed to the mound in the seventh by junior righty Jim Palko (Euclid), who pitched the final three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. Palko faced 10 batters and recorded nine outs.

 

Following Saturday's doubleheader at ONU, B-W travels to Westerville, Ohio next Wednesday, April 8 for an OAC twinbill versus Otterbein College at 3:30 p.m.
