BW Men Finish Fourth and Women Fifth at 2010 OAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's and outdoor track & field team finished fourth and the women's team placed fifth of 10 teams today (Saturday, May 1) at the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio.

Highlighting the meet for BW was junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) who was named the OAC Women's Distance Runner of the MeetChinn won both the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meter run in times of 10:59.22 in and 18:17.85, respectively.

The BW men scored 93 points, 80 behind team champion Heidelberg University. The Yellow Jacket women totaled 84 points, 48 points behind first place Mount Union College.

For the men in the 100-meter dash, junior Drew Matak (Salem/Senior) was fifth in 11.22 and sophomore Mike Smith (Wintersville) was seventh in a time of 11.34. Matak was also fifth in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 22.41. Freshman Aaron Manders (Toledo/Cardinal Stritch) ran a season-best 51.16 in the 400 meters to place eighth and sophomore Zach Szablewski (Tiffin/Calvert) was eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:46.25.

Senior decathlete Steve Price (North Olmsted) scored in three individual events today for BW.  He was fifth in 16.10 for the 110 meter hurdles, while also placing fifth in the high jump with a career-best leap of 6'6.00" and seventh in the pole vault, clearing 13'7.25". Sophomore Drew Beck (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) was fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:50.20. The 4x100 meter relay team ofMatak, Manders, sophomore Dan Sloat (Medina/Senior) and Smith was fourth in a season-best time of 42.77 and the 4x400-meter team of SloatManders, Price and Matak was sixth in a season-best 3:23.00.

In the shot put, BW placed five throwers in the top eight. Senior two-time All-American thrower Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) won the shot put with a mark of  54'2.75". Freshman Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) was fifth (50' 0.50"), and sophomore Miles Moore (Gettysburg, Pa./Delone Catholic) was sixth (49'7.25"). Freshman Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) and junior discus All-American Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) tied for seventh with marks of 49'3.75".

In the unscored hammer throw, the BW men finished 1-2-3-6. Phipps won the event with a mark of 191'11", while senior Brett Scarl (North Olmsted) was second (172'01"), Supan was third (155'02") and junior Matt Kromer (Parma/Senior) was sixth (138'10"). The BW women also had a strong showing in the hammer, finishing 1-2-3-5. Freshman Stefani Graber (North Royalton/Padua Franciscan) was first (153'08"), juniorRachel Marinucci (Brunswick) was second (138'11"), freshman Christina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) was third (138'09") and sophomore Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) was fifth (127'08")

In addition for the women, junior Krysten Kovach (North Royalton/ Parma Padua Franciscan) finished second in the 1500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:48.28 and also placed fourth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:24.19. Freshman Kaylan Lemon (Canton/Massillon Perry) was sixth in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 26.62. Junior Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley) was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.30. In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Brittany Sterling (Lima/Senior) was third in a season-best 1:05.26 and Oliver was sixth in a season-best 1:06.10. The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Jessica Ballard (Cardington/Buckeye Valley), Sterling, sophomore Lauren Nanni (Parma/Padua Franciscan) andLemon was fourth in a season-best time of 49.80 and the 4x400-meter relay team of Oliver, Lemon, Sterlingand Ballard was sixth in 4:07.15.

BW back in action on Friday, May 7 at the University of Toledo Rocket Invitational.
