BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed at the unscored Allegheny College (Pa.) Gator Invitational Meet today (Friday, May 14, 2010) in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Freshman thrower Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) joined BW's group of NCAA automatic qualifiers with a career-best throw in the discus.
The Allegheny Meet follows last week's University Toledo Tune-up and precedes next week's North Central (Ill.) College Last Chance Meet prior to BW hosting the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet in Berea. These three meets are utilized as "national qualifier" meets.
Highlighting the meet for the Yellow Jacket men was Supan firing a discus throw of 170 feet and two inches on his final attempt of the day to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet.Supan's final throw on Friday also was his last chance of the season as he is not scheduled to travel with the team to North Central next week.
Also for the men, junior All-American thrower Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) won the hammer throw with an NCAA qualifying toss of 185'4" and placed second in the discus with an NCAA Div. III national qualifying throw of 172'11". Phipps' discus throw was a personal best and re-set his own school-record. In addition, All-American senior shot putter Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) won his specialty with an NCAA qualifying toss of 54'9.25".
For the women, junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a career-best time of 10:45.10 to better her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Senior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea)won the 1,500-meter run in an NCAA Div. III national qualifying time of 4:34.86, a second and a half off her career-best.
