BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University outdoor track & field teams competed at the annual North Central (Ill.) College Last Chance Meet on Thursday and Friday, May 20-21, in Naperville, Illinois. The meet was BW's final event prior to hosting the NCAA Division III National Championship meet this Thursday-Saturday, May 27-29, at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
For the women, BW Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) improved her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 1,500-meter run by placing fourth in a school-record time of 4:32.61. Freshman Stefani Graber (North Royalton/ Parma Padua Franciscan) placed fifth in the hammer throw at 153 feet and two inches.
For the men, junior Matt Kromer (Parma/Senior) placed fourth in the discus at 154'9." BW Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete and All-American Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) placed sixth at 152'0"
The Yellow Jackets enter next week's national championship meet with four athletes automatically qualified and another five provisionally qualified.
For the men, automatical qualifiers include junior All-American thrower Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) in both the discus and hammer, Patrick in the shot put, freshman Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) in the discus, and senior Steve Price (North Olmsted) in the decathlon. Kromer and Patrick are provisionally qualified in the discus.
For the women, provisional qualifiers include Hlavin in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) in both the 1,500-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase, Graber in the hammer throw, and junior Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley) in the heptathlon.
An official competitors list is expected to be released by the NCAA on Sunday evening or Monday morning.
