BW Women Third, Men Sixth at OAC Championships; Phipps Shatters Weight Throw Record

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University women's indoor track and field team finished third and the men were sixth of 10 teams competing at the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Marietta College at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center in Marietta, Ohio. Highlighting the meet was an OAC-record and NCAA-qualifying weight throw by junior Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial).

BW also had two athletes earn special awards. For the women, senior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) was named theJulie Rajac Co-Most Outstanding Distance Athlete. For the men, senior Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) was named the Bud Yoest Most Outstanding Field Athlete

On the women's side, Ohio Northern University placed first with 122 points and was followed by Marietta (104), BW (99), Mount Union College (81), Otterbein College (75), Heidelberg University (74) Capital University (64), Wilmington College (54), John Carroll University (24) and Muskingum University (5).

For the men, Ohio Northern also placed first with 155 points and was followed by Mount Union (119.50), Heidelberg (96), Otterbein (66.50), Marietta (51), John Carroll (48), BW (48), Capital (46), Wilmington (44) and Muskingum (28).

For the BW women, Hlavin and junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) placed first and second, respectively, in the mile run with times of 5:12.25 and 5:15.27. Chinn also placed first in the 1,000-meter run with a facility-record time of 3:03.11 and Hlavin placed second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:25.96.

In the weight throw, senior Erin Norton (Lakewood/ Senior) placed first with a mark of 48 feet and six inches. Also, freshmen Stephanie Graber (North Royalton) and Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark)finished third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 46'4" and 43'1".  


D'Arcy Hlavin (BW) was one of four women's
athletes to receive special recognition. 

In the shot put, junior Rachel Marinucci (Brunswick) finished second with a throw of 39'9.25".  In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) was fourth and sophomore Kara Kasper (Amherst/ Steele) was fifth with respective times of 8.83 seconds and 8.96. Freshman Sarah Rospert (Milan)placed third in the 5,000-meter run at 18:23.06 and was followed by Chinn in fourth at 18:26.92.

For the men, Phipps won the weight throw with a mark of 61'1.25", breaking the old OAC-record by over four feet. His throw automatically qualifies him for the 2010 NCAA Championship meet and currently ranks fifth in all of Division III. Phipps also placed fourth in the shot put at 50'2.75".

In addition, Patrick placed first in the shot put with a school-record throw of 54'6.75" and second in the weight throw with a mark of 53'7". Patrick's mark in the shot put improves his NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Also for the men, senior Steve Price (North Olmsted) placed third in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.05 and third in the triple jump at 44'5.25". Junior Matt Kromer (Parma/ Senior) placed fourth in the weight throw at 47'11" and sophomore Tom Wilkin (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:29.26.

The Division III National Championship meet is March 12-13 at DePauw (Ind.) University in Greencastle, Indiana.
