Three Yellow Jackets Compete on Day One of 2010 NCAA Division III Track & Field Meet at BW

Kevin Phipps became BW's first-ever
hammer throw All-American.

BEREA, OHIO --- Three Baldwin Wallace University student-athletes competed on day one of the 2010 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea today (Thursday May 27, 2010).

Baldwin Wallace University junior All-American Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) earned All-America honors in the hammer with a sixth place finish and mark of 193 feet, five inches. Phipps became BW's first-ever All-American in the hammer throw and it was the third time in his career he has achieved All-America status.

Senior Steve Price (North Olmsted) sits in ninth place of 15 competitors after day one of the decathlon with 3,516 points. The final five events of the decathlon begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, May 28).

Price opened the day with a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 11.38 seconds. He then placed 10th in the long jump at 20 feet, 11 and three quarter inches and fifth in the shot put with a career-best 41'3.25" before finishing tied for fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6'3.25". He closed out the day with a 14th-place performance in the 400m dash (52.56).

The 110m hurdles will open day two of the decathlon at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow and will be followed by the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500m run.

Senior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) competed in the preliminary round of the 1,500-meter run and but did not advance to the final as she finished ninth in her heat with a time of 4:42.25.
 
Competing tomorrow for BW are senior All-American Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) in the shot put at 1:30 p.m. and junior Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 5:45 p.m. Phipps also competes on Saturday in the discus throw at 2:30 p.m. with freshman Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit).
