Women's Soccer's Hot Start Halted by Westminster (Pa.) in Bengals Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season against non-conference opponent Westminster (Pa.) College at the Bengals Classic, hosted by Buffalo State University, by a final score of 2-1.

BW (3-1), who came into tonight's contest with their best start since 2013, saw their hot streak halted by a Westminster (3-1) squad that the program has not faced since 2012.

The first half presented problems offensively for the Yellow Jackets as they were unable to generate reasonable scoring opportunities. The Titans possessed the ball for the majority of the period, frequently lingering on BW's defensive half of the field. Westminster's early offensive pressure eventually led to the first goal of the game in the 11th minute, headered in by sophomore Reagan Olson off a corner kick.

The Yellow Jackets were able to bounce back quickly in the second half as they replicated the Titans' goal with one of their own in the 51st minute. Junior midfielder Kenna Stones (Dresden/Tri-Valley) rose up to put senior midfielder Kenna Poptic's (Dublin/Jerome) corner kick in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Shortly afterwards, in the 64th minute, Westminster freshman Julia Redilla ran the ball in past a defender from nearly half-field and managed to shoot it past the keeper to put the Titans back up 2-1. BW was not discouraged as they kept relentlessly firing shots on goal for the rest of the second frame, but ultimately failed at evening up the score before the end of regulation.

In her first outing of the season for the Yellow Jackets, senior goalkeeper Sophia Weidner (Medina) made nine saves on 11 shots on goal, suffering her first loss.

BW returns to the pitch tomorrow for their second match of the Bengals Classic in Buffalo, N.Y., when they take on Trine (Ind.) University at 4:00 p.m.
