No. 9 Ranked Wrestling Team Ties for Fifth at Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. – The No. 9-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished tied for fifth at the Pete-Willson-Wheaton (Ill.) College Invitational in the King Arena.

BW had finished tied for fifth of 34 teams with 85 points. Messiah (Pa.) College won the invitational with a final score of 161 points.

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore All-OAC 149-pounder Richie Burke (Ithaca, N.Y.) as he finished fifth. Burke won by fall, won by decision, won by fall, dropped two matches and won the fifth place bout by forfeit.

Senior 285-pounder Gabe Mahaney (Green), senior All-OAC David Shapiro (Beachwood) and senior All-OAC 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) placed sixth. Mahaney won his first two bouts by fall, picked up a decision and then lost two matches by decision and forfeited the fifth place match.  Shapiro won by major decision, won by fall, won by decision, dropped his next two matches and had to forfeit his final match due to injury. Decatur won by fall, picked up two decisions, lost twice and lost by major decision in the fifth place match.

Freshman 125-pounder Nick Berry (Dayton/Carroll), junior 174-pounder Justin Ransom (Madison) and junior All-OAC 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) each finished in seventh. Berry won by fall, won by major decision, lost by decision, won by decision and won the seventh place bout by forfeit. Ransom lost his first bout, picked up a two decision victories, won by fall, lost by major decision and won the seventh place match by decision. Maclellan won by major decision, won by decision, lost by decision, won by decision, lost by decision and won the seventh place match by decision.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, January 31 when they host Muskingum University for an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
