No. 15 Wrestling Team Finishes Fifth at NWCA Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 15-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team posted a 4-1 record to finish fifth at the two-day National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals inside the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

BW (14-3) defeated No. 13-nationally ranked New York University 25-19 in its opening match and was defeated 35-3 by the No. 1-nationally ranked and defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) College on day one. On day two, the Yellow Jackets defeated The College of New Jersey by a score of 28-10, then defeated No. 12-nationally ranked Coe (Iowa) College 25-10 and finished the duals with a 27-13 victory in the fifth place match against the No. 18-nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Against New York, the Yellow Jackets picked up three pin fall victories. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Akron/Green) pinned his opponent at the 2:55 mark, freshman 133-pounder Charlie Nash (Norwalk) earned the fall at the 5:53 mark and All-OAC sophomore 165-pounder Anthony Arroyo (Maumee) earned the pin at the 6:07 mark. Freshman 184-pounder Zeckary Lehman (Akron/Revere) won by major decision with an 8-0 count and junior 285-pounder Gabe Mahaney (Green) finished the match off with a 4-0 decision.

In the Wartburg match, the Knights lineup featured six top-10 nationally ranked wrestlers with the lone BW victory coming in the 133-pound match when Nash earned a 4-1 decision.

Doyle opened The College of New Jersey match with a pin in the 125-pound match at the 2:27 mark. The Yellow Jackets also earned four major decision victories by Arroyo, senior 174-pounder Graham Montague (Independence), Lehman and junior All-OAC 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy). Arroyo won the 165-pound match by a score of 10-1, Montague earned the 174-pound victory with a 14-3 count, Lehman won the 184-pound match by a score of 11-1 and Maclellan earned the victory in the 197-pound bout by a score of 11-3.  Senior 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) earned a victory a 12-6 decision and Mahaney capped off the victory in the 285-pound bout with a 2-0 decision.

Against Coe, Arroyo led the way with the only fall of the match at the 1:41 mark in the 165-pound bout. Maclellan earned a major decision in the 197-pound match with an 11-3 count. Doyle, Nash, Decatur, Lehman and Mahaney each won by decision.  Doyle earned the 125-pound victory by a score of 5-4, Nash won the 133-pound match with a 10-4 count, Decatur earned a 9-8 decision in the 141-pound match and Mahaney picked up the 4-1 victory in the 285-pound bout.

In the Wisconsin-Whitewater match, sophomore 157-pounder Benjamin Hooff (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and Arroyo each earned pins in their respective weight classes. Hooff earned a fall in the 157-pound match at the 4:53 mark and Arroyo pinned his opponent in the 165-pound bout at the 3:35 mark. Lehman defeated his opponent with a 9-6 count, Maclellan won by an 11-7 decision and junior 285-pounder Andrew Sierawski (Delaware/Hayes) picked up a 2-1 victory. In addition, Wisconsin-Whitewater forfeited the 141-pound weight class.

BW is back in action as it opens OAC play on Friday, January 13 against cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7 p.m.
