Chase and Shapiro Earn 100th Career Victory as No. 14 BW Wrestlers Go 3-1 at Mount Union Duals

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Senior 174-pound All-American Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) and senior 165-pound national qualifier David Shapiro (Beachwood) each won their 100th career match as the 14th-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team won three of four dual matches at the University of Mount Union Duals in the Peterson Fieldhouse inside the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

Chase improved to 5-1 on the season and is now  101-31 in his career.   Shapiro improved to 5-0 on the season and is now 100-35 in his career. Senior two-time NCAA Division III All-American Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry), who is ranked fourth nationally at 133 pounds in Division III, remains undefeated on the season with a record of 7-0 and improved his career mark to an impressive 95-12.

BW (4-3) defeated No. 23 Lycoming (Pa.) College in its first match by a final score of 29-6.  The Yellow Jackets posted a 50-0 shutout against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College in their second match.  BW won its third match by posting a 33-9 victory against  N0. 13 York (Pa.) College.  The Yellow Jackets lost their own match of the day to No. 4-ranked Messiah (Pa.) College by a score of 18-17

The shutout against Washington & Jefferson was just the second time that BW has held an opponent scoreless during Head Coach Jamie Gibbs tenure.   The Yellow Jackets blanked Mount St. Joseph University by a score of 54-0 last season on November 14, 2014 in the Ursprung Gymnasium.

Against Lycoming, Gunter and Chase each won by technical fall.   Senior 184-pounder Ben Lebrun (Strongsville) picked up a major decision win.    Junior 141-pound national qualifier Josh Decatur (Akron/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), senior 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley/ Brunswick), sophomore 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward) all won by decision.

In the match with Washington & Jefferson, sophomore 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Akron/Green), junior 157-pounder Graham Montague (Independence), freshman 174-pounder Anthony Arroyo (Maumee) and freshman 285-pounder Michael Gregory (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) won by pinfall.   Gunter racked up another technical fall victory while junior 149-pounder Zack Taylor (Brunswick), sophomore 165-pounder Grant Rathburn (New Albany/Bishop Hartley) and Maclellan earned major decision wins.   Decatur won by decision and Lebrun picked up a forfeit victory.

Against York, Montague and Lebrun won by pinfall.  Schmidt, Shapiro and Chase earned a major decision victory.   Doyle, Gunter and Decatur all won by decision.

In the final match of the duals against Messiah, Schmidt and Shapiro earned major decision victories.  GunterDecatur and Montague all won by decision.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5 when they travel to Grantham, Pennsylvania to compete in the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah College.  
Action is slated to begin at 12 p.m. each day.
