WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The 16th-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team swept three matches at the Waynesburg (Pa.) University Quad in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Senior two-time NCAA Division III All-American Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry), who is ranked fourth nationally at 133-pounds in Division III, is five wins shy of 100 career victories and now has a career mark of 95-12. Gunter remains undefeated with a record of 9-0 on the season.
BW (7-3) defeated No. 12-nationally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) in the first match by a final score of 22-13. The Yellow Jackets beat West Virginia Institute of Technology in their second match by a final score of 45-3. BW closed out the day with a 30-12 win against Waynesburg in the third and final match.
Against Stevens, senior 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward) won by pinfall. Junior 141-pound national qualifier Josh Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) earned a major decision victory. Gunter, senior 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley/Brunswick), senior 174-pound All-American Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and senior 184-pounder Ben Lebrun (Strongsville) all won by decision.
In the match with West Virginia Tech, sophomore 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Akron/Green) won by pinfall. Decatur and senior 133-pounder Jacob Landers (Liberty Township/Lakota East) each earned major decision victories. Belford and sophomore 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won by decision. Schmidt, senior 165-pound national qualifier David Shapiro (Beachwood), Chase and Lebrun all picked up forfeit victories.
Against Waynesburg, Gunter, Chase and Maclellan all won by pinfall. Schmidt racked up a technical fall victory. Shapiro won by major decision and freshman 157-pounder Richie Burke (Ithaca, N.Y.) won by decision.
With his three victories today, Chase who is ranked seventh nationally at 174-pounds has a 9-1 mark this season and is 105-31 in his career.
Shapiro who won two of his matches on the day, is ranked seventh nationally at 165-pounds and is 8-1 this season and 103-36 in his career.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, December 21 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Desert Duals hosted by No. 1-nationally ranked Wartburg (Iowa) College. BW will wrestle Wartburg at 1 pm EST., No. 10-nationally ranked Coe (Iowa) College at 3 pm and closes out the day against the St. John's (Minn.) University at 5 pm.
