Women's Basketball Team Defeats Wilmington, 57-46, in Wilmington to Win 12th Straight Game

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had a team-high 11 points, as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 57-46, today (Saturday, February 7, 2009) at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington. The victory was a season-high 12th straight for the Yellow Jackets.   

In addition to Brough, B-W was led by Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and Serena Farage (Medina/Buckeye) with 10 points each. Wilmington was led by Kortney Kin with game-highs in points with 22 and rebounds with 10.  Marianne McGoron chipped in with 12 points for the Quakers.

With its win, B-W improves to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in the OAC and stays one game back of league-leader Capital University. With its loss, Wilmington is now 15-6 overall and 8-6 in the OAC, and is in a share of fourth place in the OAC.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 4-0 lead courtesy of a putback by freshman forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) with 14:55 remaining in the half.  After a Claire Brown three-pointer at 14:09 gave the Quakers its only lead of the first half at 5-4, the Yellow Jackets answered with a 15-5 run capped off by a jump shot by senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) that made the score to 19-10 with 7:31 to play.  The Quakers closed the half on a 9-0 run that tied the game at 19 -19 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Quakers knotted the game up at 21-21 with two free throws by Kin with 17:09 remaining.  The Yellow Jackets commenced on a 12-0 run, capped off by a layup by senior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) that made the score 33-21 with 13:45 to play. The Quakers closed to within six at 40-34 with 6:16 remaining after a layup by Kin.  B-W pushed its lead back to double figures at 48-37 with 3:01 to play courtesy of a Farage jump shot.  The Quakers would get back to within seven on two separate occasions, the last coming at the 1:25 mark, making the score 53-46 after two free throws by Brown.  The Yellow Jackets would score the final four points to secure the victory.

The Yellow Jacket women return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they travel south to Westerville, Ohio to play the Otterbein College Cardinals at the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.
