Women's Basketball Team Defeats Heidelberg, 74-60, in Berea to Win 11th Straight Game

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and senior Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg College, 74-60, tonight (Wednesday, February 4, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The victory was a season-high 11th straight for the Yellow Jackets.    

In addition to Schroeder and Quiring, B-W was led by junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. Heidelberg was led by a game-high 23 points from Brittany Skolnicki.

With its win, B-W improves to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in the OAC and entered the game tied for second place with Muskingum College and one game back of league-leader Capital University. With its loss, Heidelberg is now 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the OAC.

In the first half, Heidelberg jumped out to an 11-6 lead at 14:47 following three straight baskets from Skolnicki. B-W cut its deficit to one on three separate occasions before "The Berg" built a 23-19 lead with 8:42 left in the period. The Jackets rallied with a 12-0 run over the next 3:38 culminating in a three-pointer from sophomore guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) with 5:04 remaining before the break. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to 10, at 37-27, following a layup from junior forward Serena Farage (Medina/Buckeye) with 2:05 left on the first half clock. The Student Princes were able to end the half on a 5-2 run to bring the score to 39-32 at the break.

In the second half, B-W's lead grew to nine points, at 46-37, following a Ritzler jumper at the 16:14 mark. Heidelberg kept it close with a hot shooting hand and cut the Jacket lead to three, at 52-49, with 8:42 remaining. B-W got a key three-pointer from  Schroeder and a pair of buckets from freshman forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court-House/Miami Trace) to move ahead 61-53 with 5:09 left to play.

The Yellow Jackets wouldn't allow their lead to slip below seven the rest of the way en route to the 74-60 win.

The Yellow Jacket women return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they travel south to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers at the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m.
