Women's Basketball Team Defeats Mount Union, 67-54, in OAC Action in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and sophomore forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) each scored 13 points to lead the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team past conference-rival Mount Union College, 67-54, tonight (Wednesday, December 17, 2008) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

In addition to Butzer and Schroeder, sophomore guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range and senior guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) added 10. Mount Union was led by a 15-point, six rebound effort from Lauren Forquer. 

With its win, B-W improves to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. With its loss, Mount Union is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets opened the first half on a 14-5 run capped by a jumper from sophomore guard Carrie Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) at the 13:48 mark. The B-W lead grew to 10, at 29-19, following a three-pointer by senior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) with 4:11 remaining in the period.

Mount Union rallied with an 11-3 run culminating in a three-pointer from Nancy Faulhaber to make the score 32-30 with 1:52 left before the break. A layup from B-W freshman forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) with six seconds left on the clock sent the Jackets into the locker room with a 34-30 advantage.

B-W opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run that ended in a Quiring layup with 16:22 left to play. The Purple Raiders once again rallied to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to two, at 47-45, when Amanda Rose scored on a layup at the 8:40 mark.

However, the Jackets responded with a 16-4 run that ended in a Schroeder layup to make the score 63-49 with 2:15 remaining. Six of Schroeder's 13 points came during the run, leading B-W to the 67-54 victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, Dec. 20 when they host OAC foe Wilmington College in Berea at 3:00 p.m. B-W ends its pre-Christmas schedule in Greencastle, Indiana against powerful DePauw University on Monday, December 22 at 6:00 p.m.
