Women's Basketball Team Defeats Salisbury (Md), 73-34, in First Round of Kean (N.J.) Tourney

BEREA, OHIO -- The  eighth-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Salisbury (Md.) University, 73-34, today (Saturday, November 15, 2008) in the first round of the Kean University Tipoff Tournament in Union, New Jersey in the season-opener for each team.
 
With its win, B-W is 1-0 overall and will play host and fourth-ranked Kean in the championship game tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 16) at 4:00 p.m.  With its loss, Salisbury is 0-1 overall and plays Lebanon Valley (Pa.) College in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m. Fans can listen to the championship game locally on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet Web site at www.wBW.com. The pregame show begins at 3:40 p.m.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 25 points at 42-17 with 2:43 left when sophomore guard Carrie Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made a three-pointer. BW led at halftime, 45-23.
 
In the second half, BW extended its lead to as many as the final margin of 39 points with five seconds left when junior transfer guard Diandra Bremond (Cleveland/ John F. Kennedy) made a layup.
 
B-W was led by sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 12 points and Bremond and junior forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) each had 10 points. Junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) led the way in rebounding with a game-high 11 and freshman forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Courthouse /Miami Trace) had six caroms.
 
For the game, B-W made 40.3 percent of its field goal attempts (29-of-72), including 33.3% of its three-pointers (seven-of-21), and 72.7% of its foul shots (eight-of-11).
 
Following the championship game tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets are idle until Saturday, Nov. 29 when they travel to Washington, Pennsylvania and play Washington & Jefferson College at 3:00 p.m.  The first home game is on Tuesday, December 2 when they host traditional rival Wittenberg University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center
