12th-Ranked Yellow Jackets Defeat W&J, 60-53, in Washington, Pennsylvania

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) scored a career-high 15 points, all coming in the second half, as the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated host Washington & Jefferson College, 60-53, today (Saturday, November 29, 2008) in a non-league game in Washington, Pennsylvania.  With its win, B-W is now 2-1 overall and W&J drops to 3-1 overall.

In addition to Butzer, B-W was led by junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) with career-highs in rebounds with 14 and blocks with six.  Others in double figure for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 14 points and senior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) with 10.

For the game, B-W made 48.1 percent of its field goal attempts (25-of-52), including 26.7% of its three-pointers (4-of-15), and 54.5% of its foul shots (6-of-11).

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 6-0 lead capped by a Brough hook shot with 18:04 left in the half.  The Presidents quickly answered back to tie the score at 10-10 at the 13:30 mark when forward Maggie Gibson split a pair of free throws.  The score stayed close throughout the first half and B-W retook the lead at 20-17 with a three-point field goal by junior guard Diandra Bremond (Cleveland/ John F. Kennedy).  After a W&J basket, Schroeder scored on a put back to make the score 22-19 going into the intermission.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets took control early and a basket by Butzer made the score 35-26 with 12:53 remaining, giving BW its largest lead of the game.  Washington & Jefferson closed to within three with 5:34 left to play when guard Kennan Killeen made two free throws to bring the score to 45-42.  That is as close as the Presidents would get as the BW would outscore W&J 15-11 to close out the victory.
