Women's Basketball Team Defeats Muskingum, 61-43, in New Concord for Fifth Straight Win

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high 20 points and senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) came off the bench to add 18 as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Muskingum College, 61-43, today (Saturday, January 10, 2009) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord. The victory was the fifth straight for the Yellow Jackets.
 
In addition to her 18 points, Butzer tied junior Academic All-OAC center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) with a team-high eight rebounds. She also had two assists, a blocked shot and four steals. Brough also blocked a game-high four shots to increase her school career-record to 134 overall.
 
With its win, B-W improves to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC and next plays on Wednesday, Jan. 14 against OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a game that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio. Media and Fans can listen to this game live on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via WBW's Internet Web site at www.wBW.com. With its loss, Muskingum is now 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early seven-point lead at 10-3 on a jump shot by Butzer at the 14:29 mark. After the Fighting Muskies cut the lead to two points at 12-10, B-W went on an 11-3 run to take a 23-13 advantage at the 8:38 mark when Schroeder made a three-pointer.  BW also led by its largest margin of the first stanza at 15 points at 32-17 when Butzer canned a jumper with two seconds left.
 
In the second half, Muskingum closed to within nine points at 39-30 with 15:04 left, but B-W went on a 10-3 run to gain a 16-point bulge at 49-33 with 11:17 left when Schroeder canned another trey, one of four that she had in the contest.  B-W's biggest lead was 18 points with 12 seconds left when senior Academic All-OAC guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights/ Holy Name) scored the final points of the game.
 
In a losing effort, Muskingum was led by seniuor guard Tiffany Youel with 16 points and senior center Jessica McKenzie with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
Media and fans are reminded that next Saturday's, Jan. 17 BW home game versus Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. also will be televised by STO as will its February 14 home game versus Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m.
